SUMMARY:A Wee Bit of Scottish Culture
DESCRIPTION:1 pm: Dr. Leith Davis\, Professor of English and Director\, SFU\nResearch Centre for Scottish Studies\nVoices from the Margins of the 1745 Jacobite Rising: “ The Lyon in Mourning” Project \nIn partnership with the National Library of Scotland and SFU’s Research Centre for Scottish\nStudies\, Leith sheds new light on the part Gaelic-speakers\, labouring class individuals and\nwomen played during and after the 1745 Jacobite Rising. The talk provides a look at the impact\nthis history changing event had on the “ordinary” folk of the time. \n1:45pm: The Vancouver Gaelic Choir\nJacobite Songs\nThe choir\, established in 1983 reflects the strong Gaelic presence in Vancouver as early as 1905.\nThe choir has represented BC and Canada at numerous Royal Mod\, Scotland’s Gaelic Music\nFestival. They will be singing songs well known to us and contemporary of the 1745 rising. \n2:15pm: Ed McIlwaine\, Past President of the BC Pipers’\nAssociation and current Open Piping competitor\nThe Great Highland Bagpipe and Its Music.\nEd will demonstrate the bagpipe’s internal workings: its various components and how they\nwork together to produce the “bagpipe” sound. Ed will also demonstrate different traditional\nstyles of bagpipe music including Marches\, Dances and in Particular\, Piobaireachd.\nPiobaireachd (Ceòl Mòr) is sometimes characterized as the “classical” form of highland bagpipe\nmusic and has its roots in the 16th and 17th centuries. Of special interest will be Ed’s rendition\nof Canntaireachd\, the vocalization of pipe music that was (and is) a traditional method of\ntransmission from teacher to pupil \n3:15pm. Gail Urquhart\, President\, RSCS\nTripping the Light Fantastic.\nScottish Country Dancing as we know it today has been influenced by many cultures along the\nway. If you have ever “tripped” your way through a lively Eightsome reel you may find this\nilluminating show\, tell and participation helpful.
