April 25 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

A Wee Bit of Scottish Culture

1 pm: Dr. Leith Davis, Professor of English and Director, SFU
Research Centre for Scottish Studies
Voices from the Margins of the 1745 Jacobite Rising: “ The Lyon in Mourning” Project

In partnership with the National Library of Scotland and SFU’s Research Centre for Scottish
Studies, Leith sheds new light on the part Gaelic-speakers, labouring class individuals and
women played during and after the 1745 Jacobite Rising. The talk provides a look at the impact
this history changing event had on the “ordinary” folk of the time.

1:45pm: The Vancouver Gaelic Choir
Jacobite Songs
The choir, established in 1983 reflects the strong Gaelic presence in Vancouver as early as 1905.
The choir has represented BC and Canada at numerous Royal Mod, Scotland’s Gaelic Music
Festival. They will be singing songs well known to us and contemporary of the 1745 rising.

2:15pm: Ed McIlwaine, Past President of the BC Pipers’
Association and current Open Piping competitor
The Great Highland Bagpipe and Its Music.
Ed will demonstrate the bagpipe’s internal workings: its various components and how they
work together to produce the “bagpipe” sound. Ed will also demonstrate different traditional
styles of bagpipe music including Marches, Dances and in Particular, Piobaireachd.
Piobaireachd (Ceòl Mòr) is sometimes characterized as the “classical” form of highland bagpipe
music and has its roots in the 16th and 17th centuries. Of special interest will be Ed’s rendition
of Canntaireachd, the vocalization of pipe music that was (and is) a traditional method of
transmission from teacher to pupil

3:15pm. Gail Urquhart, President, RSCS
Tripping the Light Fantastic.
Scottish Country Dancing as we know it today has been influenced by many cultures along the
way. If you have ever “tripped” your way through a lively Eightsome reel you may find this
illuminating show, tell and participation helpful. There is more than one way to be fantastic.
There are refreshments of coffee, tea and Scottish treats.
Tickets are $15.00 at the door or through Zeffy
